Norman Borlaug’s Work Continues
Jon is on the board of Self Help International (SHI), a non-government organization located in Waverly. Norman Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Laureate, was an honorary member of the SHI Board. In November 2009, Jon and Gloria went to Nicaragua to help dedicate the SHI Norman Borlaug Seed Bank.

Julie Svendsen is an exchange student from Kristiansand, Norway, attending the Dike-New Hartford High School. Julie will talk on a variety of aspects of life in Norway: being a teenager, home life, royalty, health care, the general economy, and oil revenues.

Dr. Brock-Utne is a Professor of Education at the University of Oslo and is a Visiting Professor at Wartburg College. She has also taught at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Folk Tales and Songs from Norway
Judith Simundson will entertain us with folk tales from Norway and songs in the old Norwegian style, called kveding. She grew up in North Dakota and currently lives in Dubuque. Judith is an educator and has traveled the Midwest, providing programs for school assemblies and festivals through Art Council requests.

This should be a great program for the children!

Sturgis Falls Days, Cedar Falls

For many years Solglimt Lodge has had its Viking ship in the parade and a food booth at Sturgis Falls Days, and its popularity continues to increase.

Our members participate in any or all of the following ways: providing cash gifts to help pay expenses, working at the food booth, and baking Nordic goodies.

July 22, 23, 24, 2010 Nordic Fest, Decorah 2010 marks the 44th Nordic Fest. Nordic Fest is parades, dancers, and a multitude of incredible Norwegian art and crafts. Besides the exhibits, there are live demonstrations and items for purchase at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum and at nearby schools. All that great Norwegian food is available along the parade route.

Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon Tiki
Marilyn is a Luther College graduate and lives in Lake Mills. A teacher by profession, she became fascinated and began studying Heyerdahl, whom she describes as “an exceptional thinker [who] held some radical views during his lifetime.”

All of our Lodge meetings, except the May Syttende Mai celebration and August picnic, include a sit-down meal and are held at:

Our members pay the cost of the meal and reservations are required. Our callers contact members several days prior to a meeting for reservations.

Members usually arrive about 6:00 p.m. to get their name tag/s, pay for their meal/s, visit with fellow Lodge members, and find a place to sit.
